How to Prevent Bad Smells in Your Home

Every homeowner wants their home to be fresh and clean-smelling, but it’s not always easy to achieve. Cooking, cleaning products, pets, and even your HVAC system, can be sources of some unpleasant odors. You can prevent bad smells in your Concord, North Carolina, home by adding ventilation, using an air purifier, and maintaining your HVAC system.

Add Ventilation

Adding exhaust fans to your kitchen and bathrooms will help get rid of smells from cooking and cleaning. Ventilation can also remove excess humidity that could lead to biological growth and musty or rotting smells. To save power, consider an energy-efficient energy recovery ventilator (ERV). It works like a heat pump and also filters the air to remove bad outdoor smells before they can enter your home.

Use an Air Purifier

An air purifier can remove dirt, dust, pet dander, pollen, and other contaminants that your HVAC system’s filter doesn’t catch. It can prevent sneezing, coughing, eye irritation, and other symptoms, as well as bad smells. For additional protection, install a UV air cleaner. It uses ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms or keep them from reproducing, preventing biological growth and some illnesses.

Maintain Your HVAC System

You should change the air filters in your air conditioner and air purifier according to the manufacturer’s guidelines — more often if you have pets or family members with allergies — to keep your home smelling great. A dirty filter can spread odors from biological growth, pest droppings, and other nasty substances around your home.

You should also schedule regular professional maintenance for your system at least once a year. With regular maintenance, any problems that create unpleasant scents, such as refrigerant leaks, will be repaired before they can become severe. Maintenance will also help you avoid inconvenient, uncomfortable breakdowns.
