Why Heat Pump Sizing Matters in Stallings, NC
In Stallings, NC, the average summer temperature climbs into the 90s regularly. Therefore, having your heat pump run efficiently is quite important. That starts with having the right size heat pump, so read on to see why that matters.
Energy Costs
It might seem counterintuitive, but a heat pump wastes money and energy if it’s too big or too small. If it’s too small, it overworks to achieve the right temperature. If it’s too big, it will turn on and off frequently, but never completely cool and dehumidify the rooms furthest from the air handler.
Excessive Repairs
When your heat pump is too small and runs longer and harder than it should, parts will wear out faster, requiring excessive repair services. It will then cost you much more to maintain, and you might even have to replace it years earlier than its expected lifespan. Conversely, a system of the right size for your home will last as long as it should.
Short Cycling
A heat pump that’s too big will stop and start far more often than one that’s the right size. It will use more energy than necessary to achieve a certain temperature and shut off faster because it reaches the set temperature quickly in the rooms closest to the air handler.
However, it may not have had time to evenly cool the entire home because it reached the temperature so quickly. As temperatures equalize, the heat pump must start the cooling cycle again. The incessant on/off action causes extra strain on your HVAC system, leading to more maintenance costs and higher energy bills.
Too Much Humidity
When your HVAC system short cycles because it’s too big, it doesn’t remove the humidity from the air the way it would if it were the right size, leaving some rooms warm and clammy. Extra humidity in the home can result in condensation forming inside the system. That can cause ice to form on the evaporator coil inside the heat pump, further reducing efficiency.
